Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about sustainable construction and our eco-friendly building services.

General Questions

What makes Build Back Better UK different from traditional builders?

We specialize exclusively in sustainable construction methods using eco-friendly materials like hemp, SIPs panels, and other low-carbon alternatives. Our focus is on creating energy-efficient homes that are healthier for occupants and better for the environment.

Where do you provide services?

We currently serve all of Hertfordshire and surrounding areas, including Watford, St Albans, Hemel Hempstead, and over 20 other locations. Check our locations page for a complete list of service areas.

Are your construction methods certified?

Yes, all our construction methods meet or exceed UK building regulations. We hold relevant certifications for sustainable building practices and our team members are trained in specialist eco-construction techniques.

Hemp Construction

What is hempcrete and why use it?

Hempcrete is a bio-composite material made from hemp hurds, lime, and water. It's carbon-negative, breathable, provides excellent insulation, and naturally regulates humidity. It's also fire-resistant, pest-resistant, and improves with age.

How long does a hemp house last?

Hemp houses are incredibly durable and can last hundreds of years with proper maintenance. The material actually gets stronger over time as it continues to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere.

Is hemp construction more expensive?

Initial costs may be slightly higher than traditional construction, but the long-term savings in energy bills, reduced maintenance, and health benefits make it a cost-effective choice over the building's lifetime.

SIPs Construction

What are SIPs panels?

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are high-performance building panels consisting of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings. They provide superior insulation and rapid construction.

How much faster is SIPs construction?

SIPs construction can reduce build time by up to 50% compared to traditional methods. A typical house can be weather-tight within days rather than weeks.

Are SIPs environmentally friendly?

Yes, SIPs reduce construction waste, provide excellent energy efficiency, and many panels use recycled materials. The energy savings over the building's lifetime significantly outweigh any embodied carbon.

Costs & Timeline

How much does sustainable construction cost?

Costs vary depending on the project size, location, and specific requirements. Generally, eco-builds range from £1,200-2,500 per m². We provide free detailed quotes for all projects.

How long does a typical project take?

Project timelines depend on the construction method and size. SIPs builds can be 50% faster than traditional construction. Hemp builds take similar time to conventional builds but with superior results.

Do you offer financing options?

While we don't provide direct financing, we can connect you with green mortgage providers and help you access government grants for sustainable construction.

Sustainability & Performance

How energy-efficient are your homes?

Our homes typically achieve 70-90% reduction in heating and cooling costs compared to standard construction. Many achieve Passivhaus standards or near-zero energy consumption.

What about maintenance?

Sustainable homes generally require less maintenance than traditional builds. Materials like hemp are naturally resistant to pests and mold, while SIPs provide consistent performance for decades.

Can you retrofit existing buildings?

Yes! Our low-carbon renovation service can transform existing properties with improved insulation, renewable energy systems, and sustainable upgrades to dramatically reduce energy consumption.
